After fending off L'Armica, he orders the pair to leave with a warning to Count Lee. Because of these powers, D's attacks are redirected onto himself, but he quickly recovers from his wounds, revealing him to be a dhampir. During the battle, Rei reveals he has the ability to twist space around him. That night, Doris's farm is attacked by Rei Ginsei, Count Lee's servant, and L'Armica, Count Lee's daughter, who is highly prejudiced against humans. Ferringo, should hold off Doris' incarceration at the local asylum until he kills Count Lee. D requests that the authorities, including Greco's father, the town sheriff, and Dr. While in town with D and her younger brother Dan, Doris is confronted by Greco Rohman, the mayor's son, who offers to help if he has Doris for himself, but she refuses. Infected from Count Lee's bite, she hires D to kill the vampire and save her from becoming one. While walking her guard rounds in the country, Doris Lang, the orphaned daughter of a deceased werewolf hunter, is attacked and bitten by Count Magnus Lee, a 10,000-year-old vampire lord (also known as a Noble) for trespassing in his domain.ĭoris later encounters a mysterious vampire hunter, known only as D. It was one of several anime films featured in the music video for Michael and Janet Jackson's song " Scream". The screenplay is based on the first in the long-running series of light novels written by Hideyuki Kikuchi.īilled by the Japanese producers as a "dark future science-fiction romance", the film, like the novel before it, is set in the year 12,090 AD, in a post-nuclear holocaust world where a young woman hires a mysterious half-vampire, half-human vampire hunter to protect her from a powerful vampire lord. What are your opinions though? Do you agree or disagree? I would like to understand how and why someone could like the 1985 movie, because I simply have no idea what the appeal is.Vampire Hunter D ( Japanese: 吸血鬼ハンターD, Hepburn: Kyūketsuki Hantā Dī) is a 1985 Japanese fantasy horror OVA film produced by Ashi Productions, in association with Epic/Sony Records, CBS/Sony Group Inc. Bloodlust though might honestly be worthy of being in my top list of all-time favorite anime movies. I wouldn't say the 1985 is one of the WORST anime movies I've ever watched, but definitely one of the most dull and boring and uninspired ones. Even the giant sand mantas appearing serves the purpose of showing how fearless D is. and all creatures appearing did all serve a purpose. And the fights are better, the animation is better, the music is better, the pacing is better, all the characters are better. And the sci-fi elements were being utilized in very interesting ways for a change - especially by those previously mentioned hunters. Every character served a purpose, and all powers being used made sense and did something that mattered. The villain has a more cool design and is much more morally ambigious. Seeing other hunters other than D felt really refreshing, and they were all likable interesting characters. Even the plot felt like an improved and more original version of the plot in the first one. Every single aspect of it is an improvement over the first movie. Without a doubt one of the best anime movies I have ever seen. The 2000 movie Bloodlust on the other hand? I thought it was amazing. Same goes for lots of weird creatures we see in the background of the villain's castle that don't really do anything. The sci-fi stuff were nothing but superficial cosmetics. They didn't try to establish anything properly, and the movie didn't even TRY to take advantage of the fact that it's a post-apocalyptic world mixing sci-fi elements with Victorian gothic stuff. ![]() None of the characters were interesting, the pacing was awfully incompetent, the plot was generic and uninspired, and not even the action felt satisfying. My verdict? The 1985 movie was painfully boring and dull. For the first time in about one and a half decade, I've been rewatching both the Vampire Hunter D movies - the 1985 one, and Bloodlust from 2000.
